Knowledge sharing and development
The digitisation of society is changing the way research and education are conducted at universities. In addition, the transition to Open Science and Open Education is creating a stronger connection between science and society. As a result, the position and services of the university libraries are in a state of flux. Today, we support the entire research cycle, from literature review and data management to publishing and measuring the societal impact of research results. We provide students with inspiring places to study and assist lecturers with online teaching and the open sharing of educational materials.
This means that librarians need to continuously develop their knowledge and skills. For this reason, UKB consolidates the knowledge available within the libraries and focuses on the sustainable employability and competence development of the library staff. This is also one of our priorities for 2024.
Our approach
Developing knowledge
-
Library Basics
The Library Basics training course (in Dutch) is an initiative of UKB, SHB, OKBN and WSWB. After a successful internal pilot project, VOGIN has been offering this course annually since 2023. During the Library Basics training course, staff without formal library training can become acquainted with all aspects of the library profession and spend two days at one of the participating libraries.
-
Internal training courses and workshops
In addition, UKB regularly offers internal training courses, for example on licence negotiations.
Sharing knowledge
-
UKB Working Groups
We encourage participation in the UKB working groups. Through these working groups, UKB offers a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing. The working groups meet regularly and organise workshops, thematic meetings and webinars on current topics. These can be found in the UKB agenda.
-
Network meeting
In addition, UKB organises a network meeting once a year. This day is intended to connect everyone involved in UKB and provide updates on what is happening within UKB and its working groups.
-
Shadowing colleagues
Each university library has its own interpretation and focus areas within the dynamic world of information services. This diversity allows for knowledge sharing through job shadowing, where staff can gain insights into their colleagues’ practices.
-
Publications
Staff members of various university libraries regularly contribute to publications in which they share their expertise on current topics.
