Mission and ambitions UKB 2021 – 2024
Since 1976, UKB has been the joint venture of the 13 Dutch University Libraries and the National Library of the Netherlands (KB). Our common mission is to support and accelerate scientific progress. We do this by promoting and facilitating sustainable and reliable open knowledge. This mission is underpinned by five ambitions:
Sustainably accessible collections and their use
We are intensifying national cooperation in the field of facilitating education and research. We do so by making relevant scientific information accessible in digital and physical sources in a sustainable way, and by promoting the (digital) information skills of students and scientists. More information about making our collections as accessible as possible can be found here.
Innovation in shared knowledge infrastructure
We use smart search technology and a linked open data infrastructure to help users find the knowledge they are looking for, and to promote knowledge sharing and co-development. To this end, we use new technologies such as AI and elastic search.
Promoting and facilitating Open Knowledge
We promote open science and education and support users in making good use of this. We offer the outside world access to the scientific knowledge of Dutch universities, and we emphasise the societal relevance of Dutch education and research. More information about how UKB is working with others to achieve the transition to Open Science can be found here.
Inspiration and innovation in user applications
We share knowledge and inspire each other in a structured way to improve the experience of the users of the services, for example by creating inspiring learning, manufacturing and research hotspots on campus and online, and by developing and operating new services together. The Public Services, User Experience and Digital Services working groups collaborate on achieving this ambition.
Development of competences and skills
In order to achieve the above ambitions, we are working on the sustainable employability of our staff members. This is one of our priorities for 2024. We promote our role in innovation through knowledge sharing, direct collaboration and joint competence development that is in line with the changing information world and changing role of our libraries, for example regarding digital literacy, hospitality, agile working and multidisciplinarity. The Research Data, Content and Metadata Management, Libraries and Open and Online Education, Information Literacy and Digital Services working groups are committed to helping to achieve this ambition.
UKB facilitates subject-specific working groups and supports UKBsis, a joint programme for the benefit of the Scholarly Information Services. In this way, UKB offers a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
