Online portfolio over Open Access Week 2024

From 21 to 27 October 2024, it is International Open Access Week. This year’s theme is ‘Community over Commercialisation’. To mark the occasion, Jeroen Sondervan, Programme Leader of Open Scholarly Communication at Open Science NL / NWO (Dutch Research Council), has authored an overview of current developments and challenges in the field of open access.

During this week, a lot of focus will be on the diamond open access model, which is gaining renewed attention in the Netherlands and beyond. Not only in the Netherlands, but also in Europe and other parts of the world, this open access model is receiving renewed attention. This is fuelled by growing concerns about the ever-growing influence of a nowadays small group of highly profitable academic publishers that have a full grip on the field of scientific journals and open access publishing.

Alongside this blog post, NWO and Open Science NL, in collaboration with the UNL/UKB project group Diamond Open Access in the Netherlands, are publishing an online portfolio featuring various contributions (e.g., editors, platforms and publishers) about the diamond open access model These articles demonstrate the lively developments in the Netherlands around this community-driven open access model. The portfolio includes contributions from Sible Andringa, Sarahanne Field, Just de Leeuwe, Jan Willem Wijnen, and Maria Constantin. View the online portfolio.
