Leiden University Establishes Strategic Publication Framework

Leiden University has established a Strategic Publication Framework to improve the publication of research by academic staff and to make open science the standard. This marks an important step within the Academia in Motion program.

The framework addresses current challenges in the publication landscape, such as transparency, financial sustainability, and the growing number of publication options. By making strategic choices, the university can increase both the scientific and societal impact of its research.

The framework defines four core values for scholarly publishing and three criteria that researchers are expected to consider when making publication decisions. It provides faculties and institutes with guidance for future policy developments, always in line with the principles of open science.

The implementation of the framework will result in a publication strategy developed by each academic institute. The Leiden University Libraries (UBL) will coordinate the entire implementation process. To support this process, a Guideline for Implementing Publication Strategies is available.
